Police Chases

Police pursuits are a staple in action movies, where the good guys always catch the bad guys amidst blaring sirens and narrow escapes. However, in real life, these high-speed chases often paint a far grimmer picture.

As law enforcement officers chase down suspects, the cost is alarmingly high for innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. The potential for chaos is immense, turning a routine drive into a deadly game of chance.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) noted 28 police-related traffic incidents in 2022-2023 in the UK. Out of these, 18 incidents occurred during police pursuit, with six of them resulting in civilian deaths.

Join us as we explore tragic stories across the globe where police chases alter innocent lives forever.

Lives Lost in Vain

Although the goal of a police chase is to uphold justice, it can easily turn into an unjust tragedy for innocent drivers and bystanders. One such story unfolded in Colorado Springs, where a police pursuit ended in a devastating accident that claimed innocent teenage lives.

On April 13, 2023, a police pursuit through the streets of Colorado Springs ended in a tragedy, reported The Gazette. Officers, including Officer Matt Anderson, were in hot pursuit of a stolen vehicle driven by D’Angelo Flynn, 18, with an innocent passenger, Henry Jackson, 30.

Officer Anderson’s chase took a deadly turn when his TVI led Flynn’s vehicle to collide with a utility pole. Henry Jackson was killed on the spot, and Flynn, although surviving the crash, was later charged with multiple crimes.

The district attorney concluded that Officer Anderson’s actions were justified, but the ruling provided little comfort to those mourning Jackson’s loss. The driver in this case might be a criminal, but the passenger who lost his life in the police chase wasn’t.

Has someone you know ever ended up as a victim in any such accident? If yes, tell them that they’re eligible to file a car accident lawsuit.

While the lawsuit can’t reverse the loss they’ve suffered, it can certainly compensate for it. An experienced car accident lawyer in Colorado Springs can help them with the legalities of the lawsuit if they’re unfamiliar with it.

Police Chases Destroying Farms

Car accidents themselves expose you to potentially severe injuries, as noted by the Springs Law Group. Add to it the complexity of police car chases, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

While high-speed police chases are often deemed necessary for catching criminals, they can wreak havoc in unexpected places, including rural farms.

Typically far removed from urban chaos, these farms become the unwilling backdrop to dangerous pursuits, leading to both damage and distress for farmers.

One notable incident, reported by BBC, occurred on June 25, 2023, when a police chase tore through the countryside of Bungay in East Suffolk, England.

Officers were pursuing a stolen vehicle driven by Marcin Jablonski, 43. The chase, which started in Newmarket spilled into the rural lanes, leading the suspect to crash into a cornfield. The police didn’t pursue the car into the field.

However, crossing to the other side of the farm, Jablonski collided with a Nissan. Fortunately, no human lives were lost, with the driver being charged with DUI and dangerous driving.

As authorities reflect on pursuit policies, it is crucial to consider the broader impacts of the pursuits. Doing so will ensure that the pursuit of justice does not cause undue harm to innocent bystanders and their property.

The End of An Unborn Life

The tragic consequences of police chases can extend far beyond immediate fatalities, sometimes impacting the most vulnerable among us. Here’s an unfortunate tale of a police pursuit ending an unborn life in Pennsylvania.

On April 22, 2024, a police chase in Pennsylvania ended in a devastating accident, claiming the life of an unborn child, among others. The New York Times reported that the officers were in pursuit of a car following a recent retail theft. Seven people were in the car that weaved through the traffic, ultimately losing control.

After the car hit the concrete bridge encampment, state troopers arrived to get its occupants out safely as it caught fire. Two of them – the driver – Isaiah Miller, 20 – and Kaylan Billaps, 21, were pronounced dead at the scene. The other three occupants of the car survived and were admitted to the hospital as they recovered.

Tyjana Motley, a 17-year-old pregnant teenager, was taken to a hospital but died there shortly afterward. The efforts made to save her child through an emergency C-section were also unsuccessful.

While the link between the deaths and the retail theft in question was not substantiated, the lives lost paid an unnecessary price for it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the police chase policy in Los Angeles?

In Los Angeles, police officers can only initiate a pursuit when the violator of the law exhibits his intention to avoid arrest. Once they’ve attempted to flee the scene by a vehicle, the chase can begin with an immediate request for backup being mandatory.

Are police officers allowed to commandeer your car?

An old US law – called the “Posse Comitatus” – enables the police officers of the nation to call upon the citizens for help. However, the US Supreme Court states that a citizen’s car can only be commandeered in case of extreme necessity.

Can police officers run a red light?

Yes, police officers can run a red light under certain circumstances. These include responding to an emergency or pursuing a crime suspect. But in ordinary situations, they are held to the same standards as civilians when it comes to following traffic rules.

We understand police pursuits are unavoidable in most criminal instances. However, turning a blind eye to civilians who become collateral damage in this pursuit is also an injustice the authorities should be mindful of.
